Advancing Newcomer Wellness (ANEW) Research Lab
Vision
Improving mental health care for everyone through advancing newcomer wellness
Mission
Through research the ANEW lab re-envisions mental health care systems and clinical interventions to center the needs, knowledge, strengths, and values of newcomer1 communities locally and nationally.
Values
The ANEW lab’s work is guided by these values: Health Equity, Creativity, Justice, Human Rights, Clinical Utility and Research Impact, Knowledge Mobilization, Cultural Humility, Collaboration.
- Newcomer: We use the word newcomer to refer inclusively to voluntary immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and other migrant groups with recent arrival in the US. We choose to use the word newcomer to represent the orientation of the lab’s work – a focus on welcoming and health promotion following migration. The term centers the orientation of the receiving context and the transitional phase the follows migration, as opposed to legal status or immigration pathway. Immigrant identities are highly salient for many people throughout life, and we acknowledge that the term newcomer is imperfect and may not resonate for those with more distant migration histories. We continue to critically reflect on and revisit our language choices in the lab, and welcome these conversations. ↩︎
